Buffet Crampon BCXXI Bb & A Clarinet
The Buffet Crampon BCXXI represents a bold reimagining of the modern professional clarinet. Rather than simply refining a traditional design, Buffet Crampon reconsidered the acoustic architecture of the instrument itself—creating a clarinet with a distinctive response, expanded possibilities, and remarkable stability throughout its range.
At the heart of the BCXXI is its elongated lower joint and shortened bell. This innovative design changes the way the instrument resonates, allowing more of the lower joint to function as a cylindrical bore while the shortened bell acts as a resonator for the entire instrument. The result is a full, resonant lower register and an exceptionally stable and accessible upper register.
The BCXXI also extends the traditional clarinet range to low E♭, with a specially positioned resonance vent designed to give the note a rich, woody character. A third fingering option for middle B♭ provides additional flexibility while allowing the full bore of the instrument to resonate, opening new technical possibilities for demanding repertoire.
Professional keywork includes 19 keys and 6 rings, an E♭ lever, low F correction key, low E♭/B♭ mechanism, adjustable thumb rest, and distinctive gold-plated pillars. Carbon-fiber reinforcement rings and other modern construction elements allow the BCXXI to incorporate its extended design while maintaining a weight comparable to a traditional clarinet.
Developed in collaboration with some of the world’s leading clarinetists, including Michel Arrignon, Nicolas Baldeyrou, Martin Fröst, and Paul Meyer, the BCXXI is Buffet Crampon’s vision of what the clarinet can become in the 21st century.
Available in Bb and A, the BCXXI is an exceptional choice for the professional or advanced player looking for something beyond the traditional Buffet experience—an instrument built around resonance, stability, flexibility, and a genuinely new acoustic concept.
